Women are making a difference in security

International Women's Day is an opportunity for us to highlight the growing diversity within the security sector. Whilst the sector has long been predominantly male, at SERIS we are welcoming more and more women. This is a development of which we are particularly proud.

A sector in transition

The security sector is evolving rapidly, and women are playing an increasingly significant role in this. Whereas security used to be seen primarily as physical and reactive, modern security is much more about human interaction, communication and prevention. The fact that women are increasingly finding their way into the sector is perfectly in line with this evolution. Moreover, their presence is sometimes even a legal requirement, for example when body searches must be carried out by someone of the same gender.

The power of a different perspective

In the field, women bring a valuable addition to existing teams. They often approach situations from a broader context, are quicker to recognise emotions and have an eye for nuance. Thanks to their communication skills, tensions are often defused before they escalate. This leads to more considered decisions, a smoother working environment and better collaboration between colleagues.

Lien Calus, Manager of SERIS Academy, puts it aptly:

“The female perspective brings a sense of lightness and human touch to a sector that often revolves around hard figures. It creates balance and offers a fresh way of looking at things.”

A job with purpose and variety

More and more women are discovering that security is a meaningful and varied job. You contribute directly to the safety of others and have a dynamic and diverse range of duties: patrols, responding to alarms, first aid, reception, administration… What’s more, flexible working hours make it easier to combine the job with family life. If you’re looking for a job that makes a difference and offers variety, security is a surprising good option.

Increasing inflow, greater impact

The number of women in security is rising. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds: school leavers, administrative roles, hospitality, but also career changers looking for meaningful work. Their presence has a noticeable impact on teams: they bring calm, nuance and often act as a unifying factor among colleagues. This not only strengthens collaboration but also the service provided to customers.

Silke Bracke, Area Manager, confirms:

“When women work in a team, you notice that the atmosphere becomes more human and gentler. It makes teams stronger, more balanced and more efficient.”

Opportunities for growth at SERIS

At SERIS, career progression opportunities are wide open. Women can start as security guards and progress to become shift supervisors, team leaders, site coordinators or managers. In addition, there are numerous specialisations such as K9, port security or armed security. The stories of our colleagues show that talent is truly given opportunities here.

A sector strengthened by diversity

Women bring new energy, different perspectives and a people-centred approach that helps drive the industry forward. At SERIS, we see every day how mixed-gender teams deliver better results and how diversity contributes to a more professional and future-proof security service.

Women are no longer the exception in security, but a clear asset and an essential part of our sector’s future.
